Looking to contact a Fiction Editor? Please send me your questions – I’d love to hear from you! To give you a definite price, I will need to have a look at a sample of your text, and find out from you exactly what level of editing you are looking for. However, for an idea of costs, have a look at my Prices page.
If you aren’t sure whether you need an edit, or a proofread, the easiest way to work this out is for me to have a look at your manuscript. Ideally, I need to see an extract of about 2,000 words (taken from the central chapters of the book, as the opening tends to be reworked multiple times and is therefore often not representative of the whole), and ideally the extract should contain dialogue as well as narrative.
I can then run a quick sample edit, and annotate my suggestions to indicate whether they would fall under the remit of a proofread, or a copyedit. The sample edit will also help me work out how much support your manuscript needs, which in turn will help me determine a price.
Please note that I do book up some time in advance, so don’t wait until your manuscript is ready before contacting me. I’m happy to book you in to my next available slot, and if your manuscript is not ready by the time your slot arrives, I’ll be happy to talk about rearranging.
I can also recommend some steps you can take while your manuscript is being edited – including marketing, querying agents, buying ISBNs and building your social media presence.
Congratulations on getting to the point where you are ready to contact a fiction editor. If you have any questions at all about my editing services, the editing process, or the publishing industry, please do get in touch – I’m always happy to help, wherever I can.
