Resources

Here are some free resources and quick tips for fiction authors! A good editor will pick up on these points and help you to correct them or enhance them in your books. However, if you’ve addressed them yourself, this will save your editor time – and therefore save you money!

Useful Publishing Resources for Fiction Authors

I’ve pulled together below some resources to help you to navigate the complicated publishing process. The first two videos are from the Authors Guild and form part of their Business Bootcamp Webinar series.

How to Get a Publishing Deal

Paths to Publication (Part 1): Traditional and Small Press

This webinar from the Authors Guild (approximately one hour and twenty minutes long) looks at the route to Traditional Publishing, and answers the following questions:

❓ – why do you need an agent?
❓ – can you approach a publishing house without an agent?
❓ – should you pitch to more than one agent at a time?
❓ – do publishing houses ghost unsuccessful authors?
❓ – does your social media following matter?
❓ – how much marketing support will a publishing house provide?

How to Self Publish

Paths to Publication (Part 2): Alternatives to Traditional Publishing

This webinar (about 1.5 hours long) is the second in the Authors Guild series about Paths to Publication.

It answers the following questions:

❓ – what’s the difference between traditional publishing, hybrid publishing and self-publishing?
❓ – the benefits of self-publishing
❓ – ways to market your book
❓ – the skillset and mindset needed for successful self-publishing
❓ – the costs involved in self-publishing or hybrid publishing
❓ – getting your book into the library

How to Get an Agent – Fiction Publishing

Finding Your Agent: Seven Steps to a Successful Query Letter

The Authors Guild have produced another excellent free webinar (one hour, fifteen minutes) – this time all about how to write that query letter.

❓ – when to send the letter (before starting the manuscript, during the writing process or when your book is finished?)
❓ – the greeting (first names are fine, Dear Agent is not)
❓ – the hook
❓ – the summary (make it brief)
❓ – the essentials (including word count, genre and similar books already out there)
❓ – your credentials
❓ – the sign off (don’t make it funny)
